This month Simple: SPA’s Therapist Abigail Dear is here to advise readers on keeping skin supple and youthful.
Question from Rachel D’Cunha:
“I have just turned 25 and have always promised myself I would start using a good quality night-cream to prevent those wrinkles appearing. Can you recommend a good one that isn’t too expensive please?”
Thanks for your question Rachel. The skin is the largest organ in the body and requires a lot of TLC. Unfortunately creams cannot prevent ageing, only improve skin, however there are things that you can do to keep your skin in tip-top condition. Here are my tips for youthful skin:
• As the sun causes up to 80% of all skin ageing, try to always wear a hat to protect your skin from the harsh rays, and avoid sunbathing between the hours of 12.00-15.00. You should always use a good moisturiser with sunscreens, or even better a cream with 30+ SPF on top of moisturiser (even in the winter as UV rays can still penetrate).
• Drink plenty of water every day.
• Use a face oil at night to nourish skin; massage three or four drops of high-quality face oil onto the face and neck every night. Look for ingredients like Blackcurrant seed oil (boosts cellular renewal), and Apricot kernel oil (keeps skin nourished). The oil will penetrate the skin and keeps it supple. Simple: Therapy Nourishing Face Oil fits the bill and costs only £18.
• Hormonal changes can also break down skin collagen. Stay balanced with a healthy diet rich in nourishing vegetables, fruit, vitamins and minerals. Anthocyanidins (an active plant ingredient found in red, purple and blue fruits) can prevent the breakdown of collagen in the skin and are 50 times more effective than vitamin E. If you do have any hormonal imbalance, treatments such as regular massage, reflexology and acupuncture are great for inner balance.
• Don’t smoke. This is one of the biggest causes of premature ageing. Skincare will be ineffective if you are smoking.
• Stress can dramatically change the appearance of the skin. If you are feeling stressed, try to manage it with deep breathing, getting plenty of sleep, regular exercise and regular treatments to maintain inner balance.
