We know the weather outside might be getting a little more frosty and ice-cream might not be the first treat you would think of at this time of year but the gelato at La Gelatiera on New Row will warm your soul and lift your spirits.
We called in to have a taste of all the traditional flavours they have on offer but also some more unusual tastes as well. One of La Gelatiera’s co-owners, Antonio, was on hand to talk us through the flavours, which actually change every few days and come about through some very innovative experimentation on Antonio’s part. We started with the more traditional. Their vanilla flavour is really creamy while the chocolate sorbet is extremely rich and luxurious. It is actually dairy free, being made from cocoa mass (one of the purest forms of cocoa). The nougat had a lovely crunch and the salty caramel was just divine. It is also quite a fashionable flavour of late, now that Nigella Lawson has declared her love for it. The lemon zest, banana, and berry sorbets were also all delicious and bursting with a real natural fruity flavour. Antonio also told us about some surprising flavours that proved very popular including celery and walnut, which he said was extremely refreshing. It was not there on the day we visited but we did try the honey, rosemary and orange zest gelato which proved a very unusual but scrumptious burst of flavour.
My particular favourite was the Stracciatella, a mouth-watering combination of fior di latte (the milk, cream and sugar base for vanilla gelato) and chocolate. There is also a selection of cakes and cornetti to choose from which are all made in-house. Many of their ingredients are sourced in Slow Food in Neal’s Yard and no additives or preservatives are used in the production of their gelato. During Valentine’s week La Gelatiera will be introducing gelato truffles and also a giant heart-shaped meringue will be given away to every couple that makes a purchase in the shop. There will also be a Valentine’s Day menu, with tables available for booking.
