Games News

Covent Garden Business Forum - Covent GardenDanny Bowerin, London 2012 Sponsorship Manager at Deloitte, came to speak to the Covent Garden Business Forum on 10 January to inform businesses in the area about the need to be ‘Games ready’. Here are just some of his tips to help you minimise the impact of London 2012 on day-to-day operations and ensure that your business has the best Games experience possible:

  • Impact on the road network: Consider the impact of the Olympic and Paralympic Route Networks on deliveries and freight movement. Familiarise yourself with the impact on tubes and trains at www.tfl.gov.uk/2012.

  • Demands on transport and infrastructure: Encourage your people to retime, reroute, revise mode or reduce travel (known as ‘The 4 Rs’) wherever possible - particularly at the busiest points and on the busiest days.

  • Pressures on supply and technology: Firm up supplier contractual commitments. Consider home working implications, e.g. internet service providers.

  • Staff unavailability: Engage your people. Provide a Games experience for them if possible. Identify critical resourcing levels. Consider holiday policies, ticket holders, volunteers, recruitment periods and internships.

Covent Garden Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic - Covent GardenWhether you are training for an event or aiming to get fitter Covent Garden Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic offer advice on prevention of injury and support for amateur and professional athletes. Using biomechanical video analysis to assess running style they can help to maximise your potential. One of their senior physiotherapists will actually be treating the athletes in the Olympic Village.

On 10 February, gymnast Danny Lawrence is coming to St Clement Danes CE Primary School to show off some of his skills and talk to the children in assembly and in their classes about the importance of keeping fit and healthy. He might even check out some of their own gymnastic talent.

Definitive Physique - Covent Garden Definitive Physique has decided to get into the theme of the 2012 London Olympics by introducing a new and exciting form of group exercise. February will see their trainers start a weekly modified strongman class at Jubilee Hall gym in the Covent Garden Piazza. When most people think of strongman training they picture huge men pulling trains, lifting cars and various other feats of unusual yet impressive strength. Although possibly not the first thing that springs to mind when wanting to shed those extra pounds, this type of exercise apparently presents the perfect combination of resistance training and aerobic conditioning. They have some great events planned that will be modified to suit all levels of performance. So if you are a mum looking to burn fat, a retiree keen to keep fit or even a young professional wanting a challenge, this is the class for you. Classes will remain in place right up to the 2012 Olympics.

Definitive Physique are offering a special promotional offer to readers this month. Their strongman classes start on 6 February and they will offer three free sessions throughout the first week for those who quote In and Around Covent Garden on placing their booking. Each class is limited to 20 places and will be given on a first come first served basis. Click here to book
